I found Frank on a Thursday evening in April 2008, just as the darkness of night took its hold on downtown San Diego. I knew I wanted the first conversation to start here, life boiled down to its barest existence: food, shelter, survival. I have walked by a homeless person a thousand times, always wanting to do this very thing, just stop and sit down for a talk. Frank was tucked into the nook of a small pet store just off the main sidewalk in an area not yet touched by the revitalization projects transforming downtown San Diego. Lying under a worn, green sleeping bag, and reading a book under a single recessed light that illuminated the business entrance. This is our conversation. (more…)
